MUZZY İZZET
(Redirected from Muzzy Izzet)
'Muzzy İzzet' (born 'Mustafa İzzet'; October 31, 1974 in Mile End, London) is a British former footballer who played for Chelsea, Leicester City, Birmingham City and the Turkish national team. He is a prominent member of Britain's Turkish community, and the older brother of Kemal İzzet, who followed in Muzzy's footsteps, and also became a footballer. He is originally a Turkish Cypriot.
At the age of 19, he legally changed his name from Mustafa to Muzzy. Izzet signed as a schoolboy for Chelsea, but moved to Leicester City in the summer of 1996 because he wanted first-team football. Here his career developed immensely, with over 300 appearances in all competitions for Leicester. He formed an excellent partnership alongside Neil Lennon, before Lennon moved to join former Leicester manager Martin O'Neill at Celtic. Whilst at Leicester, Izzet was part of the clubs most successful era, winning two League Cups and helping the team finishing in the top half of the Premier League on four occasions. Izzet is seen by many Leicester fans as one of the greatest players in the clubs history.
After reports that he was homesick in the summer of 2001, Izzet was linked to a move to the club he supported as a boy, West Ham United, close geographically to where his younger brother Kemal İzzet was playing at Charlton Athletic. Muzzy didn't make the move and any family reason for moving was soon removed, when Colchester United bought Kemal Izzet in the close-season. Izzet again showed his loyalty in the summer of 2002, by staying with Leicester despite their relegation to Division One and increasing interest from Middlesbrough. He captained Leicester to promotion the following season.
Leicester were relegated to Division One (Football League Championship) in 2004, and with Izzet out of contract he was available on a Bosman free transfer. Izzet wanted to continue playing in the Premiership and the Turkish national team, leading to him signing for Premiership side Birmingham City in June 2004. His two seasons at Birmingham were ruined by injury and he was barely involved in the club's relegaton in 2005/2006. Because of his persistent injury struggles he announced his retirement in June 2006 at the age of 31.
Although primarily a midfielder, Izzet played as an emergency striker in times of crisis. He was a player capable of scoring spectacular goals even though his workrate was what endeared him to his managers.
