NANCY LOPEZ
'Nancy Lopez' (born January 6, 1957) is one of the most accomplished women in the history of professional women's golf.
Lopez was born in Torrance, California. She is also known as Nancy Lopez-Knight, since her marriage to former Major League baseball player Ray Knight. From 1980 to 1981 she competed as Nancy Lopez-Melton. She resides in Albany, Georgia.
Lopez won the New Mexico Women's Amateur at the age of 12 and went on to win the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship twice, in 1972 and in 1974. She won the Western Junior three times and the Mexican Amateur in 1975. In 1975, Lopez qualified for the U.S. Women's Open as an amateur and finished in a tie for second. 1976, as a student at the University of Tulsa, she won the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) National Championship and was a member of the U.S. Curtis Cup and World Amateur teams. At the University of Tulsa, Lopez was named a 1976 All-American and the university’s Female Athlete of the Year.
In her rookie year on the LPGA Tour, Lopez won nine tournaments, and was named Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. This feat has not been repeated to date. She has won a total of 48 official LPGA tournaments and 4 unofficial events. She was a member of the United States Solheim Cup team in 1990 and 2005, serving as captain in 2005.
Lopez was named LPGA Player of the Year four times (1978-79, 1985, 1988) and Rookie of Year (1978).
Lopez was inducted in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1987 at the age of 30..
In 1998, Lopez was voted the Bob Jones Award, the highest honor given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf.
