NANSEMOND RIVER HIGH SCHOOL


'Nansemond River High School' is a public secondary school in Suffolk, Virginia. It opened in September of 1990 and originally consisted of students from three of the four former high schools of Suffolk, VA, John F. Kennedy High School, John Yeates High School, and Suffolk High School. Nansemond River opened its doors to approximately 1700 students. The student population swelled to nearly 2000 students in the year of 2003, and in 2004, a new high school, King's Fork, was formed. As a result of the population dropping in the 2004-2005 school year to about 1100 students. However, the following year, the school opened its doors to about 1200 students once again. The current principal of this school is Mr. Thomas Mclemore, and the assistant principals, or administrators, are Mrs. Janice Bibbo, Mr. James Carnegie, and Mr. Michael Milteer.

★ The Warriors compete within the AAA Southeastern District along with Deep Creek, Great Bridge High School, Hickory High School, Indian River High School, Oscar Smith High School, Western Branch High School, and crosstown rivals King's Fork High School and Lakeland High School.

★ The Nansemond River "Warriors" are competitive in soccer, softball, football, track, theatre, field hockey, baseball and basketball(both sports a Southeastern District Powerhouse).
Extracurricular activities

Nansemond River High School has a wide variety of student activities, including the Nansemond River High School Mighty Warriors Marching Band, The Warrior Choir, The International Thespian Society (award winning drama club), and an award-winning JROTC Squad.
There are also many clubs, such as National Beta Club (which currently NRHS has the state president), FBLA, V.O.I.C.E. Club, and Key Club, to name a few.

Trivia



★ The school's colors are red, black, and white, but there are blue lockers, due to a mistake made by construction. The red lockers are across town at the rival's school, Lakeland High School.

★ The Class of 2005 earned $2,455,689.28 in scholarships; The class of 2007 bested that number with over $3 million

★ School is quite diverse: 51% African-American, 47% White, 2% other.
