NATIONAL ELECTORAL COUNCIL (VENEZUELA)
The 'National Electoral Council' (Spanish: ''Consejo Nacional Electoral''), or 'CNE', is the institution in charge of all electoral processes that take place in Venezuela.
Its five principal members are elected by a majority vote of the unicameral Nacional Assembly and all its rulings have to be agreed by a majority (three out of five) of these principal members. At present the principal members are Tibisay Lucena (President), Janeth Hernández (Vice President), Sandra Oblitas, Vicente Díaz Silva and Germán Yépez. See: CNE Profiles
The CNE has been at the center of the current political debate in Venezuela, as the opposition has tried several times to oust President Hugo Chávez. See: Venezuelan recall referendum of 2004, Venezuelan parliamentary election, 2005 and Venezuelan presidential election, 2006.
