NATIONAL LEAGUE OF CITIES
The 'National League of Cities' is the oldest and largest organization in the United States devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. The National League of Cities is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns, and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
Currently, Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson serves as president of the organization. Mayor Peterson is striving to increase awareness and dialogue in communities about the impact of media violence on children. Donald J. Borut serves as the executive director of the National League of Cities.
The immediate past president of NLC is Clarksburg, WV, Council Member Jim Hunt. Other past NLC presidents include former mayors Anthony A. Williams, (Washington DC), Sen. Richard Luger (Indianapolis), Henry Cisneros (San Antonio), Dennis Archer (Detroit) and William B. Hartsfield (Atlanta).
NLC advocates in Congress regarding issues important to local governments, including critical domestic funding programs such as CDBG, immigration reform, housing finance, and keeping local governments in control in any reform of the Communications Act.
Within the National League of Cities, the Institute for Youth, Education and Families (IYEF) helps municipal leaders take action on behalf of the children, youth, and families in their communities. IYEF tackles issues such as helping families build assets, childhood obesity, youth violence and gang activity, disconnected youth and increasing affordable housing opportunities.
''Nation’s Cities Weekly'' is the official publication of the National League of Cities. It is published weekly, except for the Monday after Thanksgiving and the Monday after Christmas, and has almost 30,000 subscribers. The paper features information on Congressional activities and how they relate to cities, community profiles, highlights of NLC research, and overviews of NLC-sponsored conferences and workshops. ''Nation’s Cities Weekly'' is also available on the NLC website. Publisher: Donald J. Borut; Editor: Amy Elsbree
In July 2007, NLC launched NLC TV, an innovative Internet-based TV web channel about and for cities. NLC TV features monthly newscasts that showcase the latest news about cities and the views of city officials on the pressing issues of the day. The channel also features web casts of events and seminars relevant to city leaders and their information needs.
Each year in late fall or early winter, NLC hosts the Congress of Cities & Exposition, a five-day conference that draws thousands of local elected officials from across the country to its trademark events, including workshops on current pressing issues, exciting general session speakers, networking opportunities, leadership training seminars, and a strong connection to the host city. The 2007 Congress of Cities is scheduled for Nov. 13 - 17, in New Orleans. The conference will be in Orlando in 2008, San Antonio in 2009 and Denver in 2010.
NLC's other signature yearly conference is the Congressional City Conference, held each March in Washington, DC. Thousands of city leaders converge on the nation's capital to discuss NLC legislative priorities with Members of Congress and the Administration and hear their views. Municipal officials share promising practices, discuss policy and participate in leadership training opportunities.
The Leadership Training Institute (LTI) is NLC’s primary learning and resource center for leadership development and training for our nation’s local municipal leaders. Programs provided by the Leadership Training Institute focus on strengthening leadership skills, along with exploring, sharing and recognizing innovative thinking and initiatives in community leadership. LTI promotes excellence in municipal leadership by offering high quality education and training programs. Since its inception in 1992, nearly 3,000 mayors, council members and local leaders participate annually in more than 30 different LTI leadership seminars and programs. LTI is lead by the Leadership Training Council, made up of local elected officials and appointed annually by the NLC President, to provide guidance and direction LTI and serve as a vehicle for NLC leadership positions.
