NATIONAL LIMITED

The 'National Limited' was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's premier train on its route between New York City and St. Louis, Missouri with major station stops in Washington DC and Cincinnati, Ohio. The New York station was actually in Jersey City, New Jersey, with bus service to and from Manhattan. The National Limited was introduced on April 26, 1925. The Slumbercoach was first used on this train 1n 1959.
The National Limited traversed some of the most challenging terrain in eastern railroading, climbing the Appalachian Mountains in western Maryland and West Virginia. Even through the diesel era extra motive power was added at the head-end to take the consist over these ridges, which meant extra stops at both sides of the heights to add and remove assisting locomotives.
In 1967, the United States Post Office dealt a heavy blow to the B & O cancelling most of its lucrative post office contracts.
The National Limited name was used by Amtrak for a train New York to Kansas City, Missouri via Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Columbus, Ohio, Dayton, Ohio, Indianapolis, Indiana and St. Louis. This Amtrak train was cancelled on October 1, 1979.
When Amtrak took over service on May 1, 1971, it did not continue operating any of B & O's remaining passenger service.
