National Museums Liverpool has its origin in 1851. It is currently hosted in seven different venues, some outside Liverpool itself: the Lady Lever Art Gallery, for example, is in Wirral. In 1980, there were over one million items in the collection. It is the only National Museums Service in the UK outside London.
The individual museums are:

World Museum Liverpool (formerly Liverpool Museum)
Planned additions are:

Museum of Liverpool

International Slavery Museum
The Museum of Liverpool is due to open in 2010: the Museum of Liverpool Life has been closed to make way for it.
