NATIONAL TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDEN
The 'National Tropical Botanical Garden' is a not-for-profit non-governmental institution. The institution is made up of major programs in scientific research, conservation, and education, and four gardens and three preserves in Hawaii (Hawaii) and one in Florida, encompassing over 1,800 acres (7.3 km²).
In recognition of a national need, the Garden was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1964 under Public Law 88-449, which formed the Pacific Tropical Botanical Garden as a non-profit institution. In 1988, Congress updated the name in recognition of the additional garden in southern Florida. The mission of the National Tropical Botanical Garden is to enrich life through discovery, scientific research, conservation, and education by perpetuating the survival of plants, ecosystems, and cultural knowledge of tropical regions.
Headquarters are in Kalāheo, Kauai, Hawaii (island of Kauai, state of Hawaii)
Garden sites are:
★ McBryde Garden - Kauai, Hawaii (island of Kauai, state of Hawaii)
★ Allerton Garden - Kauai, Hawaii (island of Kauai, state of Hawaii)
★ Limahuli Garden and Preserve - Kauai, Hawaii (island of Kauai, state of Hawaii)
★ Kahanu Garden - Maui, Hawaii (island of Maui, state of Hawaii)
★ The Kampong - Coconut Grove, Florida
Thousands of species have been gathered from throughout the tropical world, through hundreds of field expeditions by staff and through collaborations with other institutions and researchers. Its living collections include the largest assemblages of native Hawaiian plant species and of breadfruit cultivars in existence. Many of these plants are threatened and endangered or have already disappeared from their native habitats. In its preserves and beyond its properties, the NTBG is actively working to restore degraded habitats, further expanding its efforts to save plants that are otherwise faced with extinction.
Tours of each of the gardens are available.
