NEBRASKA'S 3RD CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT
The '3rd Nebraska Congressional District' seat encompasses the western three-fourths of the state; it is one of the largest non-at-large Congressional districts in the country. It includes Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, North Platte, Scottsbluff and Columbus.
It is currently held by Adrian M. Smith, a Republican. It is generally a safe seat for the Republicans; since 1935 the seat has been held by the GOP for all but two years. The previous congressman, Tom Osborne, did not seek reelection in order to wage an unsuccessful campaign for the Republican nomination for governor of Nebraska.
Census Bureau population growth estimates indicated that Nebraska will likely lose its 3rd District seat after the 2010 or the 2020 census.
