The body is naked (without scales) and elongate. There are three pairs of barbels: chin (mental) barbels, maxillary barbels, and nasal barbels. There is no adipose fin. The opercle lacks spines.
Nematogenyidae and Trichomycteridae are sister groups that together form a clade that is sister to the families Callichthyidae, Scoloplacidae, Astroblepidae, and Loricariidae.[1]
One extinct species, ''Nematogenys cuivi'', has been described in this genus.
