NEO PSYCHIKO

'Neo Psychiko' (Greek, Modern: Νέο Ψυχικό, Ancient/Katharevousa: -on), older form 'Neon Psychikon' is a suburb in the northeastern part of Athens, Greece. "Psych-" comes from Psyche meaning soul. It is located S of Attiki Odos (number 6) which opened in 2001 and wasn't fully connected until February 2004, the Olympic stadium, W of Kifissias Avenue, W of Marathonos Avenue, N of Alexandras Avenue and NE of Athens. The main streets are Kifissias Avenue, which now has an interchange which began construction in 2002 and completed in 2004, and Mesogeios Avenue to the east.
The area was made up of farmlands and forests dominated the area. The forests are in the squares today. Urban development replaced much of the farmlands in the early to mid-20th century. Today, much of the municipality is urbanized while the businesses are along its main roads. Many of the trees are aligned with the streets and in squares. A few tracts of hilly grasslands lie to the northwest or to the north.
Neo Psychiko was recognised as a separate community in 1946 and as a municipality in July 1982.
Neo Psychiko has schools, lyceums, gymnasia, banks, a post office and squares (''plateies'').
