NEW ANGOULêME

'New Angoulême' (French: ''Nouvelle-Angoulême'') was the name given to New York City in 1524 by Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano after Francis I of France, King of France and Count of Angoulême. The place became a Dutch colonial settlement until it was conquered by the British in 1664 and renamed "New York".
