NEW ENGLAND HOTSPOT
The 'New England hotspot', also referred to as the 'Great Meteor hotspot', is a volcanic hotspot in the Atlantic Ocean. The first volcanoes created by the hotspot was the Monteregian mountain chain about 125 million years ago in southern Quebec, Canada. As the North American Plate moved westward, it created the New England Seamount chain between 80 and 100 million years ago. The hotspot created the Corner Rise Seamounts about 75 million years ago. Renewed volcanic activity formed the Great Meteor Seamount chain 10-20 million years ago.[1]
