NEW HYDE PARK, NEW YORK

'New Hyde Park' is a village in Nassau County, New York, United States, on Long Island. New Hyde Park continues across the New York City border as a neighborhood in the borough of Queens.
The population of New Hyde Park was 9,523 at the 2000 census. Like its neighboring communities, it is primarily a commuter town with over 75% of the land used for single family residential, but also has warehouses and light manufacturing near the railroad station and a retail district along Jericho Turnpike.
'The Incorporated Village of New Hyde Park' is in both the Town of Hempstead and the Town of North Hempstead.

Geography

New Hyde Park is located at (40.732241, -73.684593).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 km² (0.8 mi²), all land.
Neighbors include the villages of Mineola, Garden City, Stewart Manor, and Floral Park, and various unincorporated communities.

Government

The village has a mayor-council form of government with a Mayor and four trustees, known collectively as the Board of Trustees. They are elected to serve a four year term. The current Mayor is Daniel P. Petruccio. The current board is Deputy Mayor Robert A. Lofaro, Trustee Richard A. Coppola Jr., Trustee Donald Barbieri, and Trustee Lawrence J. Montreuil.

Education

New Hyde Park has schools in the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District. Sewanhaka Central High School District which includes New Hyde Park Memorial High School and Sewanhaka High School, Elmont School District, Herricks Union Free School District, and the residents of the Parkville section of town (generally north of Hillside Avenue and west of New Hyde Park Road) are assigned to the Great Neck School District.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 9,523 people, 3,290 households, and 2,569 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,377.2/km² (11,281.8/mi²). There were 3,353 housing units at an average density of 1,541.2/km² (3,972.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 51.01% White, 0.57% African American, 0.07% Native American, 50.76% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.59% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.94% of the population.
There were 3,290 households out of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.0% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.9% were non-families. 18.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.31.
In the village the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $61,585, and the median income for a family was $72,384. Males had a median income of $50,066 versus $38,393 for females. The per capita income for the village was $24,771. About 2.4% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.9% of those under age 18 and 6.1% of those age 65 or over.
Perhaps the most (in)famous resident of New Hyde Park is legendary outsider musician Y. Bhekhirst.
