Route Description
'Route 90' is a state highway in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It runs 3.22 miles (5.18 kn) from the Betsy Ross Bridge at the Delaware River (where it enters Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) in Pennsauken Township to an intersection with Route 73 in Cinnaminson Township. The limited access freeway has four total lanes from Route 73 to Haddonfield Road (CR 644). The Haddonfield Interchange was meant to be a partial cloverleaf with two northern loop ramps and two southern slip ramps. Only one of each were actually built resulting in only a WB onramp and a EB offramp. From here Route 90 is a six lane limited access freeway across the bridge, where the number disappears and the highway is unsigned to Interstate 95. Signage in Pennsylvania on highways accessing the Betsy Ross Bridge uses circular New Jersey shields for Route 90, rather than keystone-shaped Pennsylvania shields.
History
Originally, the freeway was intended to extend to the New Jersey Turnpike and possibly further back to Route 73. There was even further consideration of extending Route 90 south to as far as the A.C. Expressway. Due to financial limitations and community opposition, the extension to the Turnpike and Interstate 295 was never built and all plans in NJ for the freeway crumbled. Across the Delaware in Pennsylvania, there were plans of extending from the Interstate 95 interchange further west and to the north. This limited access highway was to parallel the Frankford and Tacony Creek and connect with U.S. Route 1, which also was to be a limited access freeway. These plans were also crushed by the 1970's fiscal crisis and strong community opposition. Vestiges of this extension can be seen from Interstate 95 in the form of stub ramps and the mainline coming to an abrupt end as a barricaded bridge.
