NEW SLANG

"'New Slang'" is a song by The Shins which was released as a 7" single in 2001, and subsequently appeared on their album ''Oh, Inverted World''. The song describes someone telling another that if only they had gotten together, "The rest of their lives would have fared well." James Mercer has revealed in an interview with InDublin Magazine that at the time he wrote the song, he wanted to get out of his "home town, job, relationship and life", belying overtly positive tone of the song. It was made famous due to its inclusion in the soundtrack of the film ''Garden State'' and its use in a McDonald's television commercial.
It is currently being used in a Guinness advertisement in Ireland, for a limited edition stout called North Star as part of the Guinness Brewhouse series.
In the episode Eloise of the TV show the ''The Sopranos'', "New Slang" is playing when Tony and Carmela visit their daughter Meadow's apartment.
The song was referred to explicitly in the dialogue of the film ''Garden State''. In one scene, Sam, played by Natalie Portman, passes a pair of headphones to Andrew, played by Zach Braff, so he can hear the song. As Sam does so, she says, "You gotta hear this one song—it'll change your life." It was also featured on an episode of Zach Braff's TV show ''Scrubs'' and was featured on the show's 2002 soundtrack.
