NEW YORK STATE ROUTE 12

'New York State Route 12' is a major roadway in the New York State Highway System. NY Route 12 runs a length of over 150 miles on a north-south axis, making a large S-curve. It is a two lane, nondivided, full access roadway for the majority of its length, except between the village of New Hartford and Alder Creek, where it is a 4-lane highway. Within that span, it is a limited access highway in the city of Utica, referred locally as The Arterial. NY 12 runs from the city of Binghamton (technically it begins just outside Binghamton, as Upper Front Street in the Town of Dickinson turns into it) in the Southern Tier region of New York State, to Utica all the way north to the City of Watertown in the North Country region. Then it follows the St. Lawrence River valley, ending just outside the small village of Morristown.

Route description

The city of Utica, NY falls almost precisely in the middle of the highway. Between Utica and Binghamton, there are many small towns and villages, including Waterville, Sherburne, Oxford, and Greene. The only city in that length of the highway is the City of Norwich, which falls slightly more toward Binghamton, but roughly in the middle, and is a small city of fewer than 8,000 people. The distance between Utica and Binghamton is a major trucking route, and features many gas stations, truck stops, and fast food restaurants. NY 12 north of Utica follows a freeway alignment for a few miles.
Route 12 passes through U.S. Route 20, NY 5, NY 3, NY 28, and it connects twice with U.S. Route 11, once at its beginning in Binghamton, and once at its northern end in Watertown, and arcs eastward from US 11 with the stretch right after Utica being its eastern apex. Route 12 also crosses the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) at this point and also connects with Interstate 81 at both its beginning and end points in the way it does US 11. At this point endpoint it also gives ready access to and from Future Interstate 86, currently New York State Route 17 (also known as the Southern Tier Expressway).
