NEW YORK STATE ROUTE 135

'New York State Route 135', known locally as the 'Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway', or humorously abbreviated to 'SOB', is a six-lane expressway that connects Seaford with Syosset in Nassau County, New York. Also known as the 'Ralph J. Marino Expressway', it was originally planned to go through Oyster Bay and over the Long Island Sound via a bridge, but the expressway currently has its northern terminus at Syosset with NY 25 (Jericho Turnpike), and its southern terminus at Merrick Road in Seaford.
The original plan for the expressway was to start at Wantagh Parkway in Seaford, and end at the beginning of the Rye-Oyster Bay Bridge, the bridge that was supposed to link Long Island with the Hudson Valley. This bridge was then to connect with the Cross-Westchester Expressway, and perhaps the entire route (including the bridge and this expressway) signed as Interstate 287. This bridge, originally proposed by Robert Moses in the 1960s, was to connect these two regions of New York State without having to drive through the New York City area (via the Bronx and Queens).

Route description

NY 135 begins at a partially completed interchange in Seaford south of Merrick Road. After interchanging with the road, NY 135 proceeds north to an interchange with NY 27, Sunrise Highway. Further north, NY 135 encounters the northbound half of Exit 3. This half involves the use of Seamans Neck Road to interchange with NY 105, Jerusalem Avenue, while the southbound portion uses only a short portion of local roads to access NY 105.
Northeast of Exit 3 is a large cloverleaf interchange with the Southern State Parkway at Exit 4. As the route turns to the northeast, NY 135 interchanges with NY 107, Massapequa-Hicksville Road, and Boundary Avenue at Exits 5 and 6, respectively, before returning north to interchange with NY 24, Hempstead Turnpike, via another cloverleaf at Exit 7 in Bethpage.
Due north of NY 24 is an interchange with Powell Avenue and Plainview Road, the northern extension of the Bethpage State Parkway, at Exit 8. Between Exits 8 and 9, NY 135 runs along the western edge of the Bethpage State Park, separating from the park at Exit 9 with Broadway.
After two exits with local roads in Plainview, NY 135 passes through a pair of cloverleaves at the southern edge of Syosset, one for the Northern State Parkway and another for the Long Island Expressway, carrying Interstate 495. North of the LIE, NY 135 comes to an end at a partial cloverleaf that links the expressway to NY 25, Jericho Turnpike.

History

At this time, there are no plans to extend NY 135 north of its present terminus at NY 25, Exit 14, in Syosset. In the past, however, Interstate 287 was to be extended from its eastern terminus in Rye across the Long Island Sound via the Oyster Bay-Rye Bridge to Syosset, where the Interstate would continue south to the NY 25/NY 135 interchange. From here, I-287 would absorb the length of NY 135 and continue south to the Wantagh State Parkway via another extension. These plans were discarded due to opposition by residents and by environmentalists considering the ecological impact the project would have on the area. Remnants of the project are still visible today at the termini of NY 135, both of which are incomplete interchanges.
Talks of a trans-Long Island Sound crossing have resurfaced in recent years, however. Instead of constructing a massive bridge, the focus has shifted to constructing a tunnel underneath the Sound.[2]
The possibility of a southern extension past Exit 1 in Seaford was negated by the transfer of the land for the NY 135 right-of-way south of Exit 1 to Nassau County in 2004.[3]

Miscellanea

The wide median between Exit 8 and Exit 9 was meant for the formerly proposed interchange with the Bethpage State Parkway. Though normally a Super-2, the southbound lane would've suddenly became divided, gone over the northbound lane of NY 135 entering the median with a connecting ramp to the southbound lane of NY 135, then back over the northbound lane of NY 135 where the divided section would end. The northbound lane of Bethpage State Parkway would run parallel to the northbound NY 135 lane with a connecting ramp from the parkway to the expressway.
