Route description

A long portion of NY 3 travels east-west across northern New York and passes through the northern part of the Adirondack Mountain Range. Much of this section of the highway is designated as part of the Olympic Trail Scenic Byway. From where it intersects New York State Route 264 to a location north of Watertown, NY 3 is signed as a south/north highway.
New York Route 3 begins at an intersection in Sterling with Route 104A.[2] Route 3 quickly enters Hannibal and intersects with Route 104. Route 3 then enters Fulton as it passes Lake Neatahwanta. Route 176 intersects in downtown Fulton as well as Route 481. Whittaker Road leaves to the left soon after. Whittaker Road takes you to Oswego County Airport. Route 3 moves to the northeast and enters Palermo. Route 104 once again intersects with Route 3 in Mexico. Route 3 begins then to paralell Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 11 as it moves northward.
Route 104B intersects Route 3 just west of Texas, New York, in Ramona Beach. Route 3 continues north for a while, intersecting with county roads. Several miles later, Route 3 interchanges with Interstate 81 just before entering Waterford. In the towns of Karter, Woods Mill, and Fargo, Route 3 paralells the border of the Fort Drum Military Reservation. After a concurrency with Route 812, Route 3 enters Adirondack Park. Route 3 then enters Tupper Lake, a town near Lake Placid and merges with Route 30. The roads soon split and Route 3 heads eastward towards Plattsburgh.
In Plattsburgh, Route 3 becomes a local road and soon interchanges with the Adirondack Northway. Route 3 ends at U.S. Route 9 off the shore of Lake Champlain soon after.
