Route description

I-86/NY-17 is intersected several times, and runs parallel to NY-394 for a long portion of its path between Chautauqua and Steamburg. NY-394 also runs along the westside of Chautauqua Lake and services Chautauqua Institution.
After its junction with New York State Route 242, NY 394 turns north-south (although it remains marked east-west).
At its eastern end, NY 394 splits off into two roads: the main road continues north-south (without any signs to notify the end of the route change) as New York State Route 950A and heads along the Allegheny Reservoir toward the Onoville Marina and the New York-Pennsylvania border, while the original path of the road splits off eastward as New York State Route 951T, which is a state reference route that was originally part of NY 17 but is now a dead-end road. Unlike most state routes, NY 394 has no END markers on its eastern end.
