History

Its current alignment, minimal as it is, is the result of several different relocations. Once it went as far south as Hornell, and later it was the Southern Tier Expressway to its south before that became New York State Route 17.
The present alignment of NY 70 was formerly 'New York State Route 70A' between New York State Route 36 and New York State Route 961F, New York State Route 408 between the Burns hamlet of Garwoods and the present southern terminus of NY 408, and New York State Route 351 between NY 408 and New York State Route 436.
