NEWPORT, VICTORIA


'Newport' () is a south-western suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Hobsons Bay.
Newport Lakes Park is a flooded quarry surrounded by landscaped bushland and lawn, in the north of the suburb. Stone from the quarry, which operated from the early 1920s to the 1960s, was used in various building projects around the area of Williamstown.
Newport Power Station is another feature of the suburb, the smokestack of which remains one of the tallest towers in Melbourne at 183 metres.
Victoria University maintains a campus in Newport, which focuses on automotive, metal fabrication, building and electrical trades. The Newport campus hosts the Centre for Curriculum Innovation and Development.
The Newport Railway Workshops play a key role in the history of the suburb, formerly the main workshops of Victorian Railways. The workshops are south of the Newport railway station.
Scouts Australia run the 2nd Newport Scout group from a histroic wooden hall next door to the Newpoert RSL. The hall was finished in 1938 and was hand built by the Rover Crew. A paper mache dragon was built and carried all though Newpoert asking for donations, When Sufficient funds had been raised, the Dragon was burnt and its ashes placed under the hall so that the spirt of the dragon would continue to support the group. The dragon has been immortalised by its depiction on the 2nd Newport Scout badge on the group Scarf.
The group runs cub Scouts for children aged 7.5 to 11 and Scouts for children 11 to 15 years of age. Older and younger youth can join Programs in Yarraville and Williamstown. The group is part of Kariwara District in Hoadley region. The Scout group has a dragon Symbol and regularly takes part in community activities. All local Girls and Boys are welcome and can call the Group leader on 9315 2736.
Baseball is one of the sports newport is proud of. Newport Rams Baseball Club is in the 1st division and have continuity proven their talent against the top teams. Newport's Senior baseball teams have been strugging over the past 3 years with most of its older players deciding to retire, but luckely the young junior players have step up to replace them and doing a great job. The junior program has been blooming over the last 5 year with alot talented kids.
