NEWPORT (TOWN), VERMONT

'Newport' is a town in Orleans County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,511 at the 2000 census. Newport has two villages: Newport Center and South Newport.^[1]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 112.6 km² (43.5 mi²). 108.0 km² (41.7 mi²) of it is land and 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²) of it (4.07%) is water.

History

In 1917, the City of Newport was formed from portions of the towns of Newport (the former village of Newport) and Derby (a former village of West Derby)

Demographics

The US Census Bureau estimates that the town's population had increased 19.1% between 2000-2005, the second largest increase in the state of Vermont!^[3]
As of the census² of 2000, there were 1,511 people, 587 households, and 436 families residing in the town. The population density was 14.0/km² (36.2/mi²). There were 746 housing units at an average density of 6.9/km² (17.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.35% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.
There were 587 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.0% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% were non-families. 19.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.4 males.

Personal Income

The median income for a household in the town was $34,758, and the median income for a family was $43,828. Males had a median income of $28,063 versus $21,389 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,677. About 10.1% of families and 12.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.1% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.

The town is host to the Newport State Airport which serves the surrounding region. It contains two runways of 4000 feet each 05-23, and 18-36.
