NEWS (J-POP GROUP)

'NEWS' (ニュース) is a J-pop group from Johnny & Associates, which also produced groups such as SMAP, TOKIO, V6, KinKi Kids, Arashi, KAT-TUN and Tackey & Tsubasa.

2003

★ In September 2003, nine members of Johnny's Jr. were picked to form the group, NewS. The name NewS was derived from the four global directions North, East, West and South^[1] and Tomohisa Yamashita was chosen as the leader of the group.

★ On November 7, 2003, their first single was released, NewS Nippon. This was a limited release, available only at 7-11 stores (corresponding to the release date of Nov 7) as the 2003 Volleyball Championship's official song.

★ A month later in December, member Takahiro Moriuchi left Johnny's Entertainment, thus resulting in an eight member group.

2004

★ May 12, 2004, was the release of their official debut single, Kibou ~Yell~. Changing their name from 'NewS' to 'NEWS', the single was ranked #1 on the Oricon Charts.

2005

★ July 16, 2005, member Hiroki Uchi, who was involved with an incident of underaged drinking, was suspended by his agency^[2], leaving a seven member NEWS.

2006

★ January 31, 2006, Hironori Kusano of the group was also suspended as he was accused of another incident of underaged drinking^[3].

★ On April 1, the official fanclub of NEWS, KAT-TUN and Kanjani8, 'You&J'^[4] was established.

★ In May 2006, NEWS was suspended for the rest of the year due to temporary suspension of two members for underage drinking of alcohol. Members that were not related to the scandals were allowed to carry on with their solo activities, but no group activities would be carried on during this period until further notice.

★ On December 30, 2006, NEWS returned as a 6 member group. Hiroki Uchi and Hironori Kusano also return but in the demoted position of "trainees".

2007

★ January 1, 2007, NEWS make their first ever performance after their return in the Johnny's Concert Countdown.

★ March 21, 2007, NEWS's new single after their hiatus, Hoshi wo Mezashite, ranked #1 on the Oricon charts and became their second highest single after Kibou ~Yell~.
