NICKELBACK
'Nickelback' is a Canadian rock band formed in Hanna, Alberta by Chad Kroeger, Mike Kroeger, Ryan Peake and Brandon Kroeger. Their hit single "How You Remind Me" from their third album, ''Silver Side Up'' reached the top on the Canadian Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, making them the second Canadian band to accomplish this, the first being The Guess Who with "American Woman".[2]
Since their smash hit "How You Remind Me" in 2001, the band has enjoyed major commercial success. Nickelback has sold over 15.5 million albums in the United States and nearly 2 million albums in their native Canada. The band has sold almost 25 million records worldwide.[3]
The band has won nine Juno Awards[4], an American Music Award[5], an MTV Video Music Award[6] for Best Video from a Film (Hero), and a World Music Award[7] for World's Best-Selling Rock Artist. The band was also nominated for seven Grammy Awards[8], four American Music Awards. On December 4, 2006, Nickelback won three Billboard Music Awards out of five nominations.
Nickelback's latest release, ''All the Right Reasons'' has already sold over 5.8 million albums in the United States and over 8 million albums worldwide, and produced five U.S. Hot 100 top 20 singles, "Photograph", "Savin' Me", "Far Away", "If Everyone Cared", and "Rockstar", each with an accompanying music video. The album has enjoyed great longevity on the Billboard 200, spending the majority of its weeks in either the top 10 or top 20 of the chart, and was found yet again in the top 10 of the chart in its 100th week.
NHL goalie Cam Ward, wore a goalie mask that has a Dimefront theme featuring the band members playing, and NHL goalie Jamie McLennan wears a mask that features the album artwork from ''Silver Side Up''. Their cover of Elton John's song "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" featuring Kid Rock can also be heard every Saturday night during the intro of Hockey Night in Canada.
Nickelback plans to return to the studio to begin recording a new album that is scheduled for a November/December 2007 release.[9]
History
Although the founders of the band hail from Hanna, Alberta, a small town east of Calgary, they are now based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The name idea came from the nickel in change that band member Mike Kroeger often had to give customers in his previous job at Starbucks, when he would say, "Here's your nickel back".[10]
Their second full length album, ''The State'', propelled them to the mainstream with two Top 10 hits (one being "Leader of Men"), and the follow up album ''Silver Side Up'', with 2002's most-played single "How You Remind Me", gave them superstar status, scoring multi-format smashes on every album since.
They have received nine Juno Awards and were nominated for two more in 2007.
In 2006, Nickelback topped the American Music Awards nominations with three: Favorite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group, Favourite Pop/Rock Album (''All the Right Reasons''), and Favorite Alternative Artist. They won for Favourite Pop/Rock Album. Also, Nickelback won a World Music Award for best rock group on November 15, 2006, which happened to be Chad's 32nd birthday.
Controversy
In 2003, an internet meme known as "How You Remind Me of Someday" or "Nickelback to Back" was created to illustrate the similarities between the songs "How You Remind Me" and "Someday". In response, bassist Mike Kroeger said to the Cleveland Free Times in a press conference, "I think that's remarkable for someone to notice that there is a hit quality. If all hits sound the same, then sorry. When you are a band that has a distinct style such as us or AC/DC, that happens. When you have a distinct style, you run the risk of sounding similar."
