'Niigata University' is a national university in Niigata, Japan, founded in 1949. It has the origin in Niigata government-owned Medical College of establishment in 1921 with the old system Niigata high school of establishment in 1919. Largest National Universities on the Sea of Japan side in Japan.
The university comprises nine faculties (Humanities, Education and Human Sciences, Law, Economics, Science, Medicine (consisting of a ''School of Medicine'' and a ''School of Health Sciences''), Dentistry, Engineering and Agriculture) and seven Graduate Schools (Humanities, Medical and Dental Sciences, Education, Modern Society and Culture, Law, Science and Technology, and Economics). The Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Medicine ''School of Medicine'', the Faculty of Medicine ''School of Health Sciences'' and the Graduate School of Humanities are Japanese only. Every other faculty and graduate school is bilingual.
Integrated university with research laboratories at nine faculties, eight graduate schools, brain laboratories, and snowfall regional disaster research centers, etc. as of 2004.
The number of students is about 11,000 people.
Attached school (elementary school, junior high school, and school for weak children) in educational human science divisions in Asahi-cho campus where medicine system faculty and organization in Igarashi campus and city mind part where the city west has vast site are concentrated and the adjoining west Ohata districts, and, three bases of Niigata Station south campus "CLLIC " to aim at the course etc. for the class and the lifelong learning for the adult student chiefly are placed in the Niigata city above.
Government-owned Niigata Medical College is set up.
This plan was temporarily frustrated by the aggravation of the war situation though the necessity of advanced talent training was recognized in the Sea of Japan side region along with the promotion of industry, the demand of the national, integrated university installation on the Sea of Japan side (Hokuriku empire university plan) rose, and a lot of demands and the petition activities were done Niigata inside a prefecture.
The voice to request advanced talent in Niigata Prefecture centering on the industrial world becomes clamorous immediately after postwar days, and the plan of "North Japan and integrated university" is brought together.
Movement to the national, integrated university establishment by parties concerned of the various circles in Niigata Prefecture starts again based on this plan.
Seven schools (Niigata Medical College, the old system Niigata high school, the first teacher-training school in Niigata, the second teacher-training school in Niigata, the young person of Niigata teacher-training school, the prefectural agriculture and forestry special school, and Nagaoka Industrial College) are integrated.
