History of Nippon TV

★ October 28, 1952 - Nippon Television Network Corporation was founded.

★ 11:40 a.m., August 28, 1953 - Nippon TV started to telecast as the first commercial television broadcasting.

★ August 29, 1953 - Nippon TV broadcast baseball game in live for Japan's first sports live in commercial TV station (Yomiuri Giants - Osaka Tigers (Now: Hanshin Tigers)).

★ September 10, 1960 - Nippon TV was given right to broadcast color television

★ April 1, 1966 - Nippon TV formed Nippon News Network (NNN).

★ 1973 - Nippon TV formed Nippon Television Network System (NNS).

★ 1985 - Nippon TV completed a studio in New York City.

★ July, 2003 - The logo mark of Nippon TV for Japan was changed (Nippon TV → Nittele), however for overseas remained "NTV".

★ February 29, 2004 - The headquarters moved from Kojimachi to Shiodome (Shiodome NTV Tower).
NTV's television network has been plagued by scandal in recent years, most notably after it was revealed that an NTV producer paid viewers to manipulate TV ratings. NTV Chairman Seiichiro Ujiie was compelled to step down from his post at the National Association of Commercial Broadcasters of Japan, an industry-wide ethics body, in October 2003. Shortly thereafter, he resigned as Chairman. NTV subsequently came under fire for staging part of a news show.

Criticism of concealment for voyeurism scandal

On May 18, 2006, it was discovered that Nippon Television's announcer Sosuke Sumitani was sent to the prosecutor's office for filming up a high school girl's skirt using a camera phone. Sumitani served as a reporter of ''Dotch Cooking Show'' but was forced to leave because of this incident in February, 2006. Nippon Television, however, never publicly reported about the scandal or his name. In addition, not only NTV but also other radio and television stations never reported them. Some people said "'his name should be announced in public!'" and criticized NTV.

Animation

The company has intimate connections with Studio Ghibli, led by Hayao Miyazaki, and holds the exclusive rights to broadcast their motion pictures. It also produced the popular anime series Detective Conan, Death Note, Claymore and Hajime no Ippo, as well as ''InuYasha'' (which was produced though its Osaka affiliate, Yomiuri TV). NTV has also been broadcasting the yearly Lupin III TV specials since 1989, which they co-produce with Tokyo Movie Shinsha.
