NORTH/SOUTH LINE (AMSTERDAM METRO)

Construction of the north south line in Amsterdam North

The 'North/South Line' (in Dutch ''Noord/Zuidlijn'') of Amsterdam, Netherlands, is a new metro line being constructed from 2003. It will run from Amsterdam North (across the IJ waterway) to train station Amsterdam Zuid WTC in the south of Amsterdam (Zuidas area), under the IJ and through (i.e. under) the center of the city. The project has been budgeted at 1700 million Euros, and exploitation of the line is currently slated for the spring of 2013[1]. The program has experienced several initial construction difficulties, mainly at Centraal Station, resulting in financial setbacks (the project is currently 14% over budget), and the originally planned 2011 opening slipping several times. The current 2013 deadline has been contractually agreed upon by all parties, with the construction companies facing fines should the exploitation date slip any further1.
