NORTH DAKOTA STATE TAX COMMISSIONER

The 'North Dakota State Tax Commissioner' is a political office in North Dakota. The commissioner's duty is to exercise general supervision over all state-levied taxes, as well as related oversight, including over property assessors. The current commissioner is Cory Fong, who was appointed by Governor John Hoeven in 2005 after the resignation of Rick Clayburgh.
In politics, the office has been used as a pathway to larger roles in North Dakota government; recent Tax Commissioners have run for Governor, Attorney General, and the U.S. House. The current U.S. Senators for North Dakota, Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad, are both former Tax Commissioners.
