It was built between 1984 and 1996 with gradual extensions, and replaced several other hospitals such as Tynemouth Infirmary and Preston Hospital.
It serves a population of about 250,000 in North Tyneside and Northumberland.

Patients requiring neuro-surgical care are usually referred to Necastle general Hospital. Patients requiring Urology and ENT specialities are generally referred to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
