NORTHAVON
'Northavon' was a district in the English county of Avon from April 1, 1974 to April 1, 1996.
The district was formed on April 1, 1974, from most of Sodbury Rural District and part of Thornbury Rural District. The name Northavon, which was invented in 1973, simply denoted the district's position in the county.
Avon was abolished on April 1, 1996, and Northavon was merged with its neighbour Kingswood to form a new unitary South Gloucestershire.
It covered most of the area of the present South Gloucestershire apart from the urban area east of Bristol.
Northavon remains a parliamentary constituency, but will be split at the next general election (see List of Parliamentary constituencies in Avon).
