NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS
'Northbrook' is a village located at the northern edge of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 33,435 at the 2000 census, and estimated to be 34,190 as of 2005.
When incorporated in 1901, the village was known as Shermerville, in honor of Frederick Schermer who donated the land for its first train station. The village changed its name in 1923 due to anti-German backlash from World War I and was an effort to improve its public image.
Glenbrook North High School, founded in 1953 as Glenbrook High School, is located in Northbrook, as are the corporate headquarters of Underwriters Laboratories, Allstate Corporation and Crate and Barrel, the Northbrook Court shopping mall, and the Ed Rudolph Velodrome.

Northbrook is located at (42.129226, -87.840715).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 33.6 km² (13.0 mi²). 33.5 km² (12.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.39%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 33,435 people, 12,203 households, and 9,676 families residing in the village. The population density was 999.2/km² (2,588.1/mi²). There were 12,492 housing units at an average density of 373.3/km² (967.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 89.22% White, 0.57% African American, 0.04% Native American, 8.85% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.84% of the population.
There were 12,203 households out of which 35.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.3% were married couples living together, 5.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.7% were non-families. 18.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the village the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $95,665, and the median income for a family was $110,778. Males had a median income of $83,206 versus $46,182 for females. The per capita income for the village was $50,765. About 1.2% of families and 2.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.4% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
Movies set in Northbrook
Director John Hughes has used his hometown of Northbrook in several of his films. Many parts of Ferris Bueller's Day Off were filmed at Glenbrook North in the Fall of 1985 with students serving as extras (most of the interior shots, though, were filmed at the shuttered Maine North High School). The closing scene from the The Breakfast Club was shot at the Glenbrook North High School football field. The party scene from the movie Uncle Buck, starring John Candy, was filmed at a house in the Highlands neighborhood, on Crabtree Lane. The grocery store scene in She's Having a Baby was filmed at Sunset Foods, and a scene in Weird Science was shot at the Northbrook Court shopping mall.
