NOTTINGHAM TRANSPORT HERITAGE CENTRE

The 'Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre' is a museum of local transport history based at Ruddington in Nottinghamshire. It is also the northern terminus of the Great Central Railway heritage line which runs through Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire as well as the home of the Nottingham Society of Model and Experimental Engineers.

Steam locomotives


RSH Corby class 0-6-0ST No 63 "Corby". Out of service awaiting attention to a badly leaking firebox.

RSH Corby class 0-6-0ST No 56 "Ruddington". Currently having funds raised so it can be sent away for contract work to accelerate its return to traffic.

Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST No 1762 "Dolobran". Undergoing restoration, the frames are almost finished with final gloss coat being applied and the wheels are being painted and awaiting final gloss coats on two wheels and 2 and a half axels and will then be lined out, the re-wheeling is expected to be done in October, a new cab and saddle tank have been finished, the next job is the boiler and smokebox.

Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST No 2009 "Rhyl". Awaiting restoration but should enter the works once Dolobran is complete.

Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST No 2015. Awaiting a restoration.

Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST No 54 "Julia". Undergoing major restoration with the frames being painted and the cylinder block and wheels soon to receive attention.

LNER Class 2 4-4-0 (Replica). Currently funds are coming in for its reconstruction. Planned to be done once Rhyl is complete.

USA S160 2-8-0. Awaiting major restoration, planned to start once the class 2 is done.
Diesel locomotives


Class 20 No. D8048. Operational and used often to carry passenger trains in the absence of a steam engine on on a diesel weekend.

Class 20 No. D8154. Operational and one of the most regularly used diesels but fellow class 20 D8048 will also take some strain off it.

Class 25 No. D7629. Operational, on loan to the Foxfield Light Railway.

Class 37 No. 37340. Undergoing a bodywork restoration in Ruddington depot, recently fitted with new bogies.

Class 47 No. 47292. Operational but will only be used on gala days with the Gatwick express until a generator is installed in the gatwick express to provide air conditioning and heating and then it will be used regularly.

Class 47 No. 47765. Awaiting a major restoration.

Class 56 No. 56097. Nearing the end of restoration and is presently in the depot having its bodywork painted, cab interior tidied up and being reuninted with its newly restored and painted roof sections.

Class 08 0-6-0 No. 13180. Operational and a regular shunter, fitted with vacuum brakes so it can operate passenger trains.

Ruston 0-6-0 No. 423 "Churchill". Operational and performs all the shunting duties around No. 5 bullding.

Ruston 0-4-0 No. D2959. Operational and a regular shunter.

Ruston 88DS 4wd "Marbleagis". Awaiting attention, not a regular performer.

Ruston Mechanical Shunter 0-4-0. Stored awaiting removal from site.

Ruston 4wd No. 371971 "Qwag". Undergoing restoration.

Simplex 4wd No. MR1930 "Ubique". In service and used for photo charters.

Simplex 4wd No. 2028 "Morris". In service and used for photo charters.

Bus collection


As well as a railway, the Heritage Centre owns a collection of vintage vehicles (mostly buses). They are listed below in age order, youngest first.

Leyland Atlantean ARC 666T "Andrew Pickering" built in 1978. In service.

Leyland Atlantean open topper ORC 545P built in 1976. 545 is in full working order.

Leyland National Trent KVO 429P built in 1975. Awaiting restoration.

Routemaster London Transport CUV 218C built in 1965. In service.

AEC Regent III Nottingham City Transport OTV 161 built in 1954. In service.

★ Leyland Tiger South Notts MAL 310 built in 1951. Restoration should start soon.

Leyland PD1 Barton Transport JVO 230 built in 1948. Undergoing repairs to its radiator to cure a few water leaks, planned to be operational again in 2008, one of four vehicles of its type known to exist in the UK, a solution has been found to repair it.

★ Leyland Lion South Notts VO 8846 built in 1933. Stored awaiting a very major restoration.
Arson attack

On the morning of 21 February 2007, firefighters were called to tackle a serious fire that had taken hold among a row of tightly-parked buses from the collection. The vehicles were parked outside the main building, and it is suspected that the fire was the result of an arson attack. Five buses totally destroyed in fire [1]
The fire was brought under control, before it could spread to the main museum building, but not before several of the vehicles had suffered severe damage. In total, five buses were destroyed and two others damaged.
