NUCLEAR WAR SURVIVAL SKILLS

(Redirected from Nuclear war survival skills)
'Nuclear War Survival Skills' or 'NWSS' by Cresson Kearny is a civil defense manual. It contains information learned from research performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory during the Cold War.
The book is useful to the everyday person because it sought to provide creative solutions which motivated people with normal skills and household items could implement. Not only did his team devise solutions but they also tested them out with normal people and then adjusted their final recommendation. It is also notable because the tone of this government publication is one of self reliance. The topics which are covered can also be applied to crisis of lesser magnitude. Some of the more famous items are the Kearny Fallout Meter and the Kearny Air Pump.
The topics covered include:

★ Psychological and pre-crisis preparations

Evacuation

Shelter

Ventilation and cooling

★ Water

★ Food

Fire protection

Fallout Meters

★ Light

Sanitation

★ Medical issues and First Aid

★ Permanent Shelters
It is in the public domain and is available for free online and in book form (ISBN 0-942487-01-X).
