Trivia

Oakland is well-known throughout the Memphis metropolitan statistical area as a place that heavily discourages speeding within its city limits. (See "speed trap").
In June 2007, although much smaller in population than its counterparts, Oakland had the highest number of any building permits issued for any suburb in the Memphis metropolitan area, including Southaven, Olive Branch, and Collierville. This symbolizes the fact that Fayette County, TN has replaced DeSoto County, MS, as the most desirable suburban county, especially for those with higher education and income levels.
