Hanjin's first Subic-made ship underwent sea trials
The first ocean-going vessel built entirely in Subic Bay underwent sea trials Tuesday (eight months after the keel was laid in Hanjin's Drydock #5) before being delivered to Greece in June. "Other shipbuilders would have taken at least 18 months after cutting the steel, to launch the same size of ship," as per SBMA Chaiman Salonga. Pyeong Jong Yu, Hanjin's Outside Business Department manager, said the South Korean shipbuilder has fully completed the ship, a 41,000-ton cargo carrier M/V Argolikos, which has been ordered by the Greek shipping company Dioryx Marine Corp. The shipbuilder is proud that the first vessel built within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone has undergone sea trials. The ship has already received certifications, including an Attestation Certificate from Bureau Veritas (Ship Surveyors), a Cargo Ship Safety Equipment Certificate, a complete crew list, and a Certificate of Competency of the Korean crew issued by the Busan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office. The ship has a gross weight of 41,000 tons, is 258.9 meters long, 32 meters wide and 19 meters high. Its optimal speed is 24.5 knots. Five more units are expected to be delivered to Dioryx in the next few years. Another six ships with individual capacities to carry 4,300 twenty-foot metal containers intended for the NSC Schiffartsgeselhaft of Germany are currently being built in Hanjin local shipyard. The ship is temporarily identified as PN-001 but will be formally named by President Arroyo in June after sea trials are done. After the naming ceremony, the ship will officially be delivered to Dioryx Maritime Corporation in Greece. The PN-001 will be the first of the 16 container vessels of similar specifications to be built by Hanjin in Subic. The 16 ships ordered from Hanjin would cost a total of close to $1 billion, with the price of each ship costing $60 million. Undoubtedly a significant contribution to the Philippine economy and a boost to local work force. Hanjin, which is one of the biggest shipbuilders in the world today, has an investment of about $1.8 billion for its shipyard project in Subic. About 14,000 workers benefited both directly and indirectly from the project.

A Foreign Policy?
I'm speechless. The WHOLE WORLD knows about Iran's violations of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT). But Ron Paul doesn't know? The WHOLE WORLD knows that Iran is sponsoring Hezbollah and Hamas, terrorist groups SO EVIL that they use CHILDREN to deliver suicide bombs! Ron Paul doesn't know this? WHY do LEFTIST journalists such as Seymour Hursh put out the SPIN that the USA is eager to drop NUKES on an innocent, peaceful nation that only wants enriched uranium to generate electricity (because burning petroleum will pollute it's environment)! Ron Paul must have bought this lie from the Left because he describes Iran as "A country that's INCAPABLE of attacking us"? Excuse me? Ever heard of a TRUCK BOMB? It would be SO EASY to pilot a small, ocean going vessel into a major American city. Also, Canada is WIDE OPEN. Result: Millions of Americans (Chicago? LA? New York City?) vaporized in an instant. And do you think 19 hijackers on 9/11 would have refused to use The Bomb if one had been available to them? Non-intervention? This is foreign policy, alright. VERY foreign, indeed! Ron Paul's policy is to pretend that terrorism doesn't EXIST.
SS Great Britain and Matthew of Bristol
Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (Right), the ship SS Great Britain was built in 1843 at the Great Western Dockyard in Bristol, under the supervision of Brunel and his colleagues at the Great Western Steamship Company & Thomas Guppy, Christopher Claxton and William Patterson. SS Great Britain was the first ocean-going ship to have an iron hull and a screw propeller and, when launched in 1843, was the largest vessel afloat. She originally carried 120 first-class passengers (26 of whom were in single cabins), 132 second-class passengers and 130 officers and crew but, when an extra deck was added, it increased the number of passengers to 730. It is now an award-winning visitor attraction and museum in Bristol Harbour. This is a full-scale replica of the ship on which John Cabot sailed to America in 1497. She was built in Bristol to celebrate the 500th anniversary of his discovery of Newfoundland
DOULOS in Toamasina Madagascar 2005
September 27th ~ October 11th, 2005 Highlights: (quoted fr www.doulos.org) Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world with a population of about 17 million inhabitants. A survey conducted a month ago determined that 47% of the population are illiterate, revealing many possibilities for the ship's objectives of promoting literacy and education. Two important local leaders warmly welcomed Doulos to Madagascar. "The visit of the ship to Madagascar is a privilege and blessing for the Malagasy people," said His Excellency Mr Rasolehery, who represented the president of the senate. "As the representative of the president of the senate, I wish you a successful visit!" Mr Rasolehery also expressed his hope that when the ship returned, there would be at least one citizen of Madagascar on board. "We are friends!" exclaimed His Excellency Professor Emile Tsizaraina, governor of the province, who also welcomed the vessel to Toamasina. He remembered the visit of the vessel ten years ago and thanked the ship for returning again. "I will not leave the ship as I came in," he shared. "I'm changed by my time on board." The governor also voiced his hope that the people of Madagascar would learn from the crewmembers. "There is no place for strife and fighting on board and that's what we want to see in us." There are over 3,000 people of Chinese descent living in Madagascar. One of them, Joseph Li, has lived in Madagascar for over five years and was quite impressed with the special programme organised for the Chinese community in Toamasina. The event, titled, 'Fulfilled Life, Is It Possible?' was filled to capacity as tickets were snapped up as soon as they were available to the public. "I thought it was very good," said Joseph. Many of the programme participants also visited the book fair where books on Chinese cooking proved to be very popular. Over the weekend, over 18,000 visitors came on board, swamping the book fair. Most of the titles on board are heavily discounted in recognition of the fact that many in the local community have very limited resources. Add to that the novelty of having ice cream on the world's oldest ocean going passenger ship and it becomes apparent why there was such a long queue at the book fair coffee bar.
