The Old City of Jerusalem Part one of three
This is the first part of my walk through Jerusalem on 30 December 2007. This walk contains sections of all four quarters, the Armenian, Jewish, Christian and Moslem. We pass the Jaffa Gate, the four synagogues with a view over the Mount of Olives, part of the market (which will reappear several times yet) and a visit to the Holy Sepulchre church which is said to be the site of the crucifiction, annointment and burial of Jesus Christ. My channel on you tube : http://www.youtube.com/alanheath is one of the most prolific from Poland, although unfortunately not the most visited. With almost one film per day, one may be forgiven for thinking I do nothing else but I do have a day job as well. I have produced more than 400 original films, most in English but also in Polish, French, Italian, Spanish and the occassional hint of German and Hebrew. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating! There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- http://www.ceepackaging.com - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focussing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine! Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region and the sites http://www.ceepackaging.com/articles/... and http://www.ceepackaging.com/articles/... give a pretty good idea where future films are going to come from! Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film! In 1997 I founded Polish Business News http://www.pbn.com.pl .There are a number of business related films here and I intend to do many more on CRM (customer relations management). My blog can be found via http://www.ceepackaging.com and http://www.pbn.com.pl and contains background information and more details of many of my films. This information is in English. I have also a second blog on the site http://www.navigeo.net/blog/alan-heath . This site has been recently started by a friend and I think it will soon be one of the leading travel sites in Poland, if not Central Europe. It contains additional information about some of the places and events shown in these films but most of that is in Polish.
Twin Cities Polish Festival - August 15-16, 2009
After a decade-long absence, the Twin Cities Polish Festival is back, bringing together Minnesotans to celebrate Polish culture and Polish American heritage. More info at TCPolishFestival.org
Polish Coast ,Baltic Sea
Polish Coast is about 700km. It starts in Swinoujscie (West) and ends in Krynica Morska (East). There are many places to be visited in a summer time. There wild beaches and crowded beaches where disco music is played all night long. Everyone can find something interesting. In a winter time it is better to visit big cities as Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot or Kolobrzeg, Szczecin. These places I mentioned are crowded all year long. Gdansk and Sopot are the best in the East Coast if you want to have fun, Sopot is even better. Kolobrzeg (West Coast) is also great. At a German border there 2 towns that are great as well, i.e. Swinoujscie and Miedzyzdroje. Both are on the islands, i.e. Uznam and Wolin. Wolin is known from old Viking times, on this island there was Viking's port called Jomsborg. Of course you willnot see any Vikings anymore, but you can have fun seeing some rebuilt viking drakkars, some modern Vikings, etc. Middle East Coast. There is a nice town Leba where you can see the biggest dunes in Europe. Pharaoh movie was shot there, so dunes are all right. So there are plenty of space for tourists. Poland has beautiful beaches with very fine, soft sand. Amazing, Polish sand is beter than Californian one. You gotta believe me. Besides we have ambers. Where else can you find ambers on the beach? Ancient Romans travelled to Poaland just to purchase ambers. Pubs, taverns, discos are across the whole Polish Coast. There are beaches with plenty of tourists and there are almost wild ones. You can eat really fresh fish there. Restaurants purchase them directly from fishermen. Anybody is to be satisfied. You willnot regret your holidays on the Polish Coast.
An American Railfan in Poland: Train to Belarus, 1 of 2
In the year 2000 my wife and I decided to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary by spending a month, more or less on our own, in Poland. I say we were "more or less on our own" because we did spend the middle two weeks traveling with our Polish pen pals Piotr and Ewa and their 15 year old son Maicek. (Ewa teaches English as a foreign language, Piotr understands it well enough that he could laugh at some of my jokes, and Maicek already had enough English skills to get by). They, like us, are a railfan family. We were also joined by our friends Ted and Kay from Alamosa, CO. They are not railfans, but I think that caused them more distress than it caused us. After returning home I started telling people about what a great time we had in Poland and the responses almost invariably were along the line of "I didn't know you were Polish" and "what could you possibly find of interest in Poland to justify spending a whole month there?" Just for the record, neither of us have any Polish heritage, we did not speak or understand a word of Polish (well, OK, we knew pierogi and kielbasa) and we had never been outside the US before (well, OK, we've been to Canada a couple of times). Also, while I knew that there was still some mainline and narrow gauge steam to be found in Poland, this trip really was not about trains or railfanning. Only 12 of the 28 days were spent on or near trains (not counting the trams that you just naturally use to get around in the cities) and of those, five involved intercity train travel. Poland is a small country, about the size of the state of Colorado, but there is so much to see and do there that we were easily able to fill our time. I started posting my series "An American Railfan in Poland" as a way of introducing Poland as a travel destination to my fellow American railfans. In this series, I try to include a little background on the history, culture, and natural beauty of the country as I understand them (and I am certainly no expert) and to share those things that I found interesting. Funny thing though, this series seems to have attracted more Polish subscribers than Americans. In the best Star Wars tradition, these movie clips are being created in a totally random order. Chronologically, in terms of the trip, this one should have followed "An American Railfan in Poland: Elk, Pt. 2" which was posted about a year ago. Incidentally, I returned to Poland in 2003 with my son Selby for another three weeks with more of a railfan focus. Some movie clips from that trip are included in this series and others are in the "Wolsztyn Experience" series.
The Old City of Jerusalem Part two of three
This is continuing the walk through the Old City in the Moslem and Christian quarters of east Jerusalem. This part takes in part of the via Dolorosa including the second, sixth and eighth stations of the cross, the church built on the site where Jesus was whipped and parts of the market which seems to be everywhere. We walk out of the city via the Lion Gate - the place where Israeli paratroopers entered Jerusalem in June 1967. There is also a little story about Suleman the magnificent and how he repented of his high taxation policies and chose to do something for the inhabitants himself. The Old City of Jerusalem Part three of three
This part of the walk in the Old City of Jerusalem includes part of the Jewish Quarter including the Western Wall (Wailing Wall). From the wall we get a wonderful panorama over the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa mosque before leaving the city to walk around the walls to the church which houses the tomb of Mary and Joseph, the parents of Jesus. From there we head up the hill to the Mount of Olives which will come as a major disappointment to anyone who has never seen it before. We can see the Golden Gate where Jesus reputedly entered Jerusalem and from where the Messiah will enter or re-enter Jerusalem. However the gate is blocked up at present and so the Messiah will have to give some advance warning, remembering of course that on the Sabbath no-one works, so Messiah, if you are reading this do please make the appropriate allowances. On the subject of which I would also like to recommend to the Messiah that he takes the flight timetables handed out by Polish Airlines Lot and Israeli Airlines El Al with a pinch of salt.
