OLD TOONGABBIE, NEW SOUTH WALES

'Old Toongabbie' is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
The small suburb of Old Toongabbie is situated approximately 24km (15 miles) west of the central business district of Sydney. It is in the Local Government Area of the City of Parramatta. The name Toongabbie is derived from an aboriginal word.
Toongabbie is noted for being the third settlement set up after the British occupation of Australia in 1788, and Old Toongabbie includes the sites of the original colonial settlement. In the 1990s this area was reduced, with the part immediately north of Wentworthville, which is also known unofficially as the locality of Constitution Hill, being reclassified as Wentworthville. It is within the local government area of the Cty of Parramatta.
Old Toongabbie has boundaries with Toongabbie to the west, Wentworthville to the south, Northmead to the east and Winston Hills to the north.
The area is bounded on the north east by Toongabbie Creek, a tributary of the Parramatta River. Although Toongabbie is relatively densely settled, in recent years programs of bushland regeneration, pollution control and remedial works to local waterways have seen a surprising return by several rare wildlife species, and in the 1990s platypus were reported to have returned to sections of Toongabbie Creek.
