UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA

The University of Nebraska at Omaha, founded 1908 as the 'University of Omaha', is the Omaha, Nebraska, campus of the University of Nebraska system, and is the second-largest institution of higher education in Nebraska (after the University of Nebraska–Lincoln), located in the metropolitan area. In 1931, the university became the public 'Municipal University of Omaha', and assumed its current name in 1968 following a merger with the University of Nebraska. The institution has a strong tradition of serving commuter students from within Omaha, but in recent years has developed student housing to better serve students from Nebraska, the United States, and the world for whom the commute is not convenient. UNO has a strong academic reputation, with many well-regarded programs. It has more ranked programs than the other two sister universities in the University of Nebraska system.

UNO is the home of the Peter Kiewit Institute a $70 million state-of-the art computer science facility and engineering facility, making it one of the premier computer science, management information systems(MIS) and bioinformatics programs in the region. PKI houses UNO's College of Information Science and Technology and UNL's College of Engineering and Technology. The College of Information Science and Technology offers undergraduate/graduate degrees in Computer Science, Management Information Systems and Bioinformatics (graduate degree offered in collaboration with UNMC's Pathology's graduate program). In addition, the University of Nebraska, Omaha enjoys an excellent reputation and the following are the national rankings for the undergraduate and graduate programs are:-

It is the only ranked department of Economics Nebraska. Other bigger departments in the region that are ranked ahead are the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, University of Iowa, University of Colorado-Boulder, Iowa State University and the University of Missouri-Columbia.

★ UNO Business Students Rank High on Exams
The college of business administration's graduate MBA students ranked in the top 5% nationally, while the undergraduate students ranked in the top 15% on a most recent standardized exam on business topics conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

The University of Nebraska Omaha has two campuses North (Dodge Street) and South (Pacific Street). They are connected via Elmwood Park Road, also called South 67th Street, and separated by Elmwood Park. UNO plans to expand the Pacific Campus via the new [Aksarben Village], which will also house dormitories for the formerly all women's college College of St. Mary's and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). It also will include a new Courtyard by Marriott, conference centers, and the Aksarben Campus will also feature wifi access. Through this project, UNO aims to create the atmosphere of a college town in the center of Omaha. The University can be accessed by Happy Hollow Boulevard, Dodge Street/US Highway 6, Aksarben Drive, Pine Street, and Pacific Street.
The school's sports teams are called the Mavericks. They participate in the NCAA's Division II and in the North Central Conference, except in ice hockey. The hockey program competes in Division I as a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The men's ice hockey program reached the NCAA post-season tournament in the 2005-2006 season. The women's soccer and softball teams have won the NCAA's Division II's national championships. Lead by a stellar crew of seasoned veterans, the men's basketball team won back to back conference titles in 2003 & 2004 snapping a 20-year drought from this conference title stage.
The University of Nebraska-Omaha is involved in the North Central Conference for all athletic teams. The nickname of the university is the Mavericks. The school's official colors are scarlet and black. UNO is one of the most successful and elite NCAA Div. II athletic programs in the nation and is also home to a top NCAA Div. I men's hockey program.
UNO will join the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association on July 1, 2008. The conference will be home to 11 of UNO's 14 teams. The ice hockey team will remain a member of the CCHA. Men's Wrestling and Women's Swimming and Diving haven't had plans announced for their conference affiliations, as the MIAA does not sponsor championships for those sports.
The Aksarben Campus is the south campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, located in midtown Omaha, Nebraska. It is bounded by Pacific Street on the north, 64th Street on the east, 72nd Street on the west and Center Street/West Center Road on the south. Once the site of the Ak-Sar-Ben horse racing track, today the Campus houses classrooms, the Scott Village and Scott Transfer Center. It will soon be home to dormitories for the University of Nebraska Medical Center and for the College of Saint Mary. The majority of land is still held by the Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation Trust.
