ON POINT
'''On Point''' is a two-hour call-in radio show hosted by Tom Ashbrook, a former Boston Globe foreign editor, author and Internet entrepreneur, and produced by WBUR in Boston, Massachusetts. Using a fast-paced format, often with multiple guests, the show strives to foster a lively, challenging conversation about the most intriguing issues of the day, with some of its most influential figures.
It is distributed to more than 100 public radio stations across the United States by National Public Radio, and continues to grow yearly in its subscriber stations. Major markets include New York City and Washington, D.C., and its listenership extends coast to coast and internationally by satellite and internet. Callers often phone in from a wide variety of locations. ''On Point'' also averages more than 240,000 podcast downloads a month.
Guests have included Senators John Edwards, Barack Obama and Joe Biden; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich; former Secretary of State James Baker; Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer; Gloria Steinem; Bill Cosby; cultural critic Camille Paglia; music mogul Russell Simmons; authors Joyce Carol Oates, John Updike and Carl Hiaasen; businessmen Jack Welch, George Soros and Eli Broad; management guru Peter Drucker; musicians Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls, hip-hop artist Ryan Leslie and singer-songwriter Martin Sexton; and journalists David Remnick, Andrea Mitchell, David Halberstam, Andrea Stone, Clarence Page, Ron Brownstein, David Brooks and Joe Klein.
''On Point'' is broadcast live from Boston from 10:00 to 12:00 EST, occupying the former time slot of ''The Connection'', and repeated from 07:00 p.m. to 09:00 p.m. The show often features senior editor of ''The Atlantic Monthly'', Jack Beatty, as a news analyst. Its recent guest hosts have been Jane Clayson, former CBS morning anchor and correspondent; and Linda Douglass, political correspondent formerly of ABC and CBS.
''On Point'' was created by Graham Griffith, and first broadcast on 17 September 2001 to provide special coverage in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks. The show's popularity led to it becoming a standalone program, first broadcasting under the ''On Point'' name on 4 February 2002.
It is currently led by senior producer Wen Stephenson; veteran producers Karen Shiffman and Julie Diop; and director Eileen Imada.
The ''On Point'' theme music, "Everything is Alright", comes from the album ''Pause'' by Four Tet.
