Hawaiian Monk Seal in Open Ocean Honolulu
http://honolulucitydates.blogspot.com presents: the Hawaiian Monk Seal in Open Ocean. The Hawaiian monk seal (Monachus schauinslandi) is considered the most endangered seal in U.S. waters, with only about 1,200 left. Ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua is the name used to describe the Hawaiian monk seal. Literally it means, "the dog that runs in the rough (seas)." These seals get their common name "monk seals" because of their bald appearance, solitary habits and a fold of skin behind their heads which resembles a monk's hood. It gets its common name from its round head covered with short hairs, giving it the appearance of a medieval friar. The name may also reflect the fact that the Hawaiian Monk Seal lives a more solitary existence, in comparison with other seals that in places collect in large colonies. The Hawaiian Monk Seal comes from ancestors that go far back in time and are the most primitive living members of the Family Phocidae, having separated from other true seals perhaps 15 million years ago.
Day 5: Puerto Rico's Old World Fort El Morro from the Ocean
Morning at Sea on the way to Puerto Rico. The Old World fort of El Morro at the tip of the island kept invaders literally "at bay" for hundreds of years, making Puerto Rico a pivotal location in history and geography. Not such a far trip from St. Thomas, Puerto Rico is actually visible from a hilltop vantage point on St. Thomas. In fact, we spent most of the night's passage from one island to the other idling, just far enough out to sea to allow the ship's casinos to be open for business. It would have been nice to walk around St. Thomas in the early evening, and enjoy the unique experience of a Caribbean island sunset *from* the island. Maybe we could have had time for a drink and some shopping at a relaxed pace after our action-packed day of shore excursions, but as usual: Just follow the money. The casinos need to be open. jpmeyer.com

Coastal Wilderness
This is the first video of The Sailing Series. The music heard here is from William Orbit's album Hello Waveforms, and the song is named Fireband. The scenes you see come from Alaska's and British Colombia's Inner Passage Area. These areas contain thousands of islands and bays and encompasses up to sixty-four thousand kilometers (40,000 miles) of shoreline. The "Inner Passage" is also commonly referred to as the "Inside Passage". This route along Alaska's panhandle and Canada's western coast is frequently utilized because it can protect vessels from the harsh conditions that would otherwise be experienced if traveling in the open ocean. The majority of the footage is of the Alaskan portion of the Inner Passage, which extends 800 kilometers (500 miles) from north to south and 160 kilometers (100 miles) from east to west. Along this "maritime highway" observant ones will likely see a huge variety of different sized waterborne craft, including everything from freighters and cruise ships to kayaks and canoes. Additionally, you may catch a pod of seals basking on the rocky shoreline or perhaps even a fleeting glimpse of a wale coming up from the depths for a quick gasp of air. This area is amazingly pristine and is covered with an almost uncountable number of mountainous peaks. Queen Frederica Cruise to Crete 1961
Our family vacation continues from the port of New York and makes it way to the open ocean. The scene starts off with the latest technology of loading luggage using overhead cranes as opposed to a human chain of sailors. Then you'll see the hoards of people, crying faces, waving arms, and love in their hearts, and with hope and wonder that their loved ones will once again return home. This ship is loaded with hundred of Cretans who will share this ocean trip to Crete to participate in the Pancretan Excursion in 1961. This was an amazing journey of these people, many of whom were friends and relatives, and many who became great friends as a result of this journey. You'll see many shots of Helen Sooklaris, her mother and aunts. Shot and edited by Anthony Sooklaris in 1961

On the Road With Oregon Bounty - Day 4- A Big Fish Tale
I caught my first salmon in July of 1974, off the Oregon coast near Florence. A full 33 years would pass before I would again be out on the open ocean, looking back at Oregon's rugged coastline clinging to the horizon. This time, I was there to shoot a segment for "On the Road with Oregon Bounty" highlighting sport fishing in Oregon. What a perfect idea, I thought. Call it work, and go catch a big one.
