'Optical tape' refers to a tape used for
computer data storage, similar to
magnetic tape, but using
optical instead of
magnetic means of storage. They provide the possibility of far greater storage capacities than either magnetic tape or
optical discs.
Optical tapes were considered an alternative to magnetic tapes in the earlier days of computing but magnetic tapes were found to have higher reliability and cost-effectiveness.
Nowadays although available, they are rarely used, since for most purposes magnetic tape or optical disc is a more cost-effective solution. They do have a role in extremely massive data storage requirements, e.g. signals intelligence agencies.
Since theoretically they offer much greater storage, several companies are involved in research in attempting to improve optical tape technology.
