OWSLEY COUNTY, KENTUCKY
'Owsley County' is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 4,858. Its county seat is Booneville6. The county is named for William Owsley, the Governor of Kentucky from 1844 to 1848. It's a prohibition or dry county.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,858 people, 1,894 households, and 1,388 families residing in the county. The population density was 9/km² (24/mi²). There were 2,247 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 99.22% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.02% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,894 households out of which 32.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.80% were married couples living together, 12.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% were non-families. 24.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the county the population was spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 101.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $15,805, and the median income for a family was $18,034. Males had a median income of $25,100 versus $18,203 for females. The per capita income for the county was $10,742. About 41.70% of families and 45.40% of the population were below the poverty line, including 56.30% of those under age 18 and 34.50% of those age 65 or over.
