PACEM IN TERRIS AWARD

The 'Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award' has been awarded annually since 1964 in commemoration of the 1963 Encyclical "Pacem in Terris" of Pope John XXIII. It was created by the Davenport Catholic Interracial Council of the Diocese of Davenport in the U.S. state of Iowa. Since 1976 the award has been presented by the Quad Cities Pacem in Terris Coalition. In 2005 the coalition consisted of the Diocese of Davenport, St. Ambrose University, Augustana College, Churches United of the Quad-Cities, The Congregation of the Humility of Mary and CASI (The Center for Active Seniors, Inc.).
Six recipients — Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel and Lech Walesa — also received the Nobel Peace Prize.
