History
The Freshman Campus was built in less than a year at a cost of approximately $26 million, although this figure could be close to twice as much, as stated on a KING-TV news report close to the start of the first school year. Ground was broken on July 2nd, 2004, and the buildings were ready by the start of the 2005-2006 school year. In its opening year, the school held about 1,000 students that would have otherwise occupied the overcrowded Issaquah and Skyline high schools. Aside from the relief of overcrowdedness, some reasoning behind building the campus is to foster inter-school friendships and to provide a transition into high school. Some students complain because they feel that they are not yet in high school or are cut off from the other schools. Some students who have attended the Freshman Campus complain that the school does not feel like a true high school. In addition, some feel separated from students attending the traditional high schools.Despite these concerns, Pacific Cascade's first year was deemed an overall success. Average grades were higher than that of the previous ninth grade class, and discipline problems were fewer than those of any other school in the district. During the summer of 2006, there was a proposal to turn the Freshman Campus into a middle school. However, the district board decided against this, instead voting to open a new middle school. Proponents of PCFC were pleased by this decision, citing the success of the school in support. An update to this information has recently been released. The plans for a new middle school have been canceled, instead reverting to the previous plan of converting PCFC to a middle school.
Test Scores
Pacific Cascade Campus has proven so far to increase the overall average test scores of ninth graders who attend this school versus the ones who attend a traditional high school system.
