CALIFORNIA MIRAMAR UNIVERSITY
(Redirected from Pacific Western University)
'California Miramar University' ('CMU') is a distance learning private university located in San Diego, California. From 1977 to 2007 it was known as 'Pacific Western University' ('PWU'). Pacific Western University is also the name of a now defunct university in Hawaii, [1] Pacific Western University (Hawaii), which was once owned by PWU California.[2] Currently they are not affiliated with each other.
California Miramar University was established as Pacific Western University (California) in February 1977. Currently, California Miramar University offers Associate, Bachelor, and Master degrees in six programs,[3] including ''Business Administration'', ''General Studies'', ''Public Administration'', and ''Leadership Management''. The university also engages in joint study programs with Vietnam National University, Hanoi [4]. These programs are conducted at the graduate level [5], in particular for the MBA program [6]. The university also conducts business school programs in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China [7].
California Miramar University is not accredited[8] by any accreditation agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (which is the agency that recognizes the accepted accreditation agencies in the US). As such, its degrees may not be acceptable to employers or other institutions. In some jurisdictions (such as Texas) the use of degree titles from the university may be restricted or illegal. 1
Pacific Western University operated in the Brentwood, California suburb of Los Angeles for its first twenty years, and then moved to Westwood, California where it remained until relocating to San Diego, California in January 2006.
According to ''Inside Higher Education'', the school changed its name to distance itself from past controversies.2 The name change to California Miramar University happened in approximately March or April 2007. The name "Miramar" comes from the university's location, on Miramar Road in San Diego (the same address as its previous location under the name "Pacific Western University").[2][3]
PWU California was linked to PWU Hawaii,[9] although they are now two different entities.[10] At one point, the two universities shared a common web address, 9 and the two universities were once run by the same owner, but in 2004 the Hawaii branch was sold off.2 CMU (PWU California) is no longer associated with PWU Hawaii. 2 PWU Hawaii was sued in 2005 by the State of Hawaii. 9 On May 9, 2006, the First Circuit Court of Hawaii entered a Default and Final Judgment against PWU Hawaii.[11] The judgement dissolved the university's corporate status, and effectively forced it to cease operations. 11[12]
