![]() | Hugh Potton plays Vierne II on 5 manual organ Extract of one of the series of concerts at Hammerwood Park East Grinstead featuring the French Symphonic composers who should be as well known as Beethoven and Brahms. As here, Hugh is renowned for playing the whole repertoire from memory and he has his performance so under his fingertips that he rises over the technical and artistic difficulties over which others agonise and revels in the utter fun of playing. This exuberance comes through to his audiences who are transfixed and fascinated to see him coping with both a repertoire and an instrument of the utmost complexity. The instrument served in a former 3 manual incarnation for a dozen years at Londonderry Cathedral in Northern Ireland and was enlarged with an Italian Solo division and a Dutch/North German Echo division as a performance instrument at Hammerwood Park. The instrument can also be played in the French manner with Grande Choeur, Grande Orgue and Recit Expressif. Behind this instrument is a two manual Hunter pipe organ which served at the Royal School of Church Music at Addington Palace for many years. The setting of these organs in the Elgin Room at Hammerwood provide an unusually intimate relationship between the audience, the performer and the organ. Details of further concerts are on http://www.hammerwood.mistral.co.uk/concerts.htm |
