'Pankow' [] is a borough of Berlin. In 2001, it was merged with the former boroughs of Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee; the resulting borough retained the name Pankow.
It encompasses an area of 103.07 km² and has, as of 2003, about 347,100 inhabitants.
Its current mayor is Matthias Koehne (SPD).
Between 1945-1960, Majakowskiring in Pankow was the home to many members of the government. Western writers therefore often referred to Pankow as shorthand for the East German regime.
The Rykestrasse Synagogue Germany's largest synagogue, is located in the Pankow neighborhood.
