PAPINEAU (ELECTORAL DISTRICT)

Papineau in relation to the other Montreal area ridings

'Papineau' is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1948 to 1988 and since 2004. Its population in 2001 was 103,942.
The name of the riding comes from a street in Villeray named after Joseph Papineau.
At 9 square kilometres, it also covers the smallest area of any federal riding in Canada.[1]

Geography

The district includes the neighbourhoods of Villeray and Parc Extension, and the western part of the neighbourhood of Saint-Michel in the Borough of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension.

History

The electoral district of Papineau was created in 1947 from parts of Hochelaga, Mercier, St. James and Saint-Denis ridings.
The riding was abolished in 1987 when it was redistributed between Papineau—Saint-Michel, Rosemont and Saint-Denis ridings.
In 2003, a new "Papineau" riding was created from parts of Papineau—Saint-Denis riding.
Members of Parliament

This riding has elected the following Members of Parliament:
# Camillien Houde, Independent (1949-1953)
# Adrien Meunier, Liberal (1953-1963)
# Guy Favreau, Liberal (1963-1967)
# André Ouellet, Liberal (1967-1996)
# Pierre Pettigrew, Liberal (1996-2006)
# Vivian Barbot, Bloc Québécois (2006-present)
Justin Trudeau, son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, received the Liberal nomination to run for the Papineau seat in the next federal election; barring any accidents, Trudeau will face Barbot when the election occurs (probably in 2007 or 2008, though theoretically it could happen as late as October 19, 2009).
