PARKLAND, FLORIDA


'Parkland' is a city in Broward County, Florida where zoning laws are designed to protect the "parklike" character of the city. The population was 13,835 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 20,556.[1]

Parkland is located at (26.315357, -80.240444).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.9 km² (10.8 mi²). 26.4 km² (10.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it (5.38%) is water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there were 13,835 people, 4,349 households, and 3,805 families residing in the city. The population density was 523.7/km² (1,356.7/mi²). There were 4,522 housing units at an average density of 171.2/km² (443.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.42% White, 3.07% African American, 0.12% Native American, 3.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.93% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.33% of the population.
Parkland is the best educated city in Florida, proportionately, with 60.7% of adult residents (25 and older) holding an associate degree or higher, and 52.8% of adults possessing a baccalaureate degree or higher (2000 Census).
There were 4,349 households out of which 57.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 78.2% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 12.5% were non-families. 9.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.18 and the average family size was 3.42.
In the city the population was spread out with 35.1% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 3.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $102,624, and the median income for a family was $108,657. Males had a median income of $73,942 versus $41,425 for females. The per capita income for the city was $41,896. About 2.0% of families and 2.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
Languages

As of 2000, speakers of English as a first language was 82.79%, Spanish was at 11.48%, Italian at 2.03%, and German made up 1.20% of the population.[2]
